Delano Now Staff reports

Kern County Sheriff’s deputies arrested three men over the weekend after receiving a tip that they were conducting a stolen vehicle chop shop on their property near Delano.

On Sunday Oct. 9, Delano Substation deputies were dispatched to the 29000 Block of West Cecil Avenue regarding a citizen’s tip that stolen vehicles were being dismantled at the residence.

Deputies arrived and contacted Diego Gomez, 22, and Rafael Melgoza, 39, who were on the property. After a preliminary investigation, deputies found multiple vehicles there reported stolen out of Tulare County. Deputies identified other indicators and evidence that suggested the subjects were dismantling the stolen vehicles for parts, commonly referred to as a “Chop Shop.”

Deputies obtained a search warrant for the property and found a loaded shotgun inside the residence along with several stolen tools and miscellaneous equipment valued at over $10,000.

Deputies later determined the tools belonged to a local electrical company. Both men were arrested and booked into the Central Receiving Facility for vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, owning and operating a chop shop, and conspiracy. During the search, Gomez was found in possession of methamphetamine and he was additionally charged with possession of methamphetamine.

During a follow-up investigation Oct. 10, Raymond Lopez, 32, of Delano was identified as an additional suspect and co-conspirator. He was arrested and booked into the Central Receiving Facility for vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, owning and operating a chop shop, conspiracy, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Anyone with additional information about this investigation is asked to contact the Kern County Sheriff’s Office at 661-861-3110 or the Secret Witness at 661-322-4040.
