Delano Union School District’s Oral Language Festival awards Top Performers
Students from district schools took part in the in-person Delano Union School District’s 2023 Region 10 Oral Language Festival held the afternoon of Thursday, March 2 at Harvest Elementary School and La Viña Middle School. According to event organizer Lea Cantu, more than 100 students participated in this year’s competition, which is up significantly from the 62 that competed in the on-line 2022 competition.
SERIOUS SOLO (Gr. 7-8) – 1st: Caleb Prieto, La Viña Middle School – The Boy in the Striped Pajamas; 2nd: Jasmine Gill, La Viña Middle School – Out of the Dust; 3rd: Savannah Ramos, Cecil Avenue Math and Science Academy, A Boy Called It.
SERIOUS DUO (Gr. 7-8) – 1st: Ezekiel Basconcillo and Andrea Justine Veloya, La Viña Middle School – Counterfeit Son.
HUMOROUS SOLO (Gr. 7-8) – 1st: Kendra Sandoval, Cecil Avenue Math and Science Academy – Aliens Love Underpants; 2nd: Ashley Heredia, Cecil Avenue Math and Science Academy – Have Fun, Molly Lou Melon; 3rd: Emma Andrade Smith, Cecil Avenue Math and Science Academy – The Witch’s Broom.
SERIOUS SOLO (Gr. 4-6) – 1st: Adalene Flores, Fremont School – You Shouldn’t Have to Say Goodbye; 2nd: Yaritza Guillen Ceja, Nueva Vista Language Academy – Wonder – The Via Chapter; 3rd: Emma Alvarez, Nueva Vista Language Academy – The Giving Tree.
SERIOUS DUO (Gr. 4-6) – 1st: Alexa Robles and Sophia Robles, Nueva Vista Language Academy – Charlotte’s Web; 2nd: Zulema Martinez and Britney Farias, Albany Park School – The Dot; 3rd: Katherine Carnero and Sarina Garcia, Nueva Vista Language Academy — The Giving Tree.
HUMOROUS SOLO (Gr. 4-6) – 1st: Koumba Diallo, La Viña Middle School – Earrings!; 2nd: Aleksia Rodriguez Solorio, Morningside School – If you ever Want to Bring your Alligator to School, Don’t!; 3rd: Kayleen Hernandez, Harvest School – Be Quiet.
HUMOROUS DUO (Gr. 4-6) – 1st: Ariana Castellanos and Lexie Acosta, Harvest School – My Lucky Day; 2nd: Isabelle Aranda and Jazzlyn Ramirez, Terrace School – Dog vs. Cat; 3rd: Jaylah Gutierrez and Jakeilah Duran, Princeton Street School – Dumb Bunnies.
VERSE CHOIR (Gr. 4-6) – 1st: Samantha Lira, Mayra Ortiz Lopez, Martha Guadalupe Alvira, and Victoria Ayala, Princeton Street School – Up Up Down; 2nd: Marely Cristel Valdez, Lupita Valdez Sanchez, Gennessis Andrade, Jazlyn Flores, Jesus Gastelum, and Sergio Adame, Fremont School – Joe; 3rd: Raylee DeFlitch, Sofia Vera, and Yarely Martinez, Morningside School – Dragons Love Tacos.
Mrs. Cantu thanked the DUSD board of trustees, Superintendent Rosalina Rivera, and district administration for their continued support. She also thanked the coaches and judges for assisting with the event.
