McFarland High School student, Annika Fernandez Invited to Play in Barcelona this summer.
Annika Fernandez, a top honors senior at McFarland High School, will be heading to Spain this summer with Occidental College. The team will travel to Barcelona to participate in the Euro Basketball Cup 2023. She has been playing basketball since first grade at the McFarland Recreation Center and has been recognized for her skills on the court throughout her high school career.
Occidental College, located in Los Angeles, is one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country and has a strong NCAA Division III athletic program. Coach Anahit Aladzhanya selected Annika to join their team.
Aladzhanya (a.k.a. “Heat”) is the collegiate head coach of the women’s basketball team at Occidental. She is the chair of SCIAC women’s basketball coaches’ committee and it will be her third year as regional representative of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Committee.
“The invitation is a testament to Annika’s hard work and dedication to the sport.” said her coach, David Couch.
“I am very proud of Annika and all that she has accomplished,” said her mom, Maribell Fernandez. “I am excited for her to have the opportunity to experience basketball at an international level.”
McFarland High School is excited to see what Annika will bring and wishes her the best of luck on her trip to Barcelona. “Congratulations Annika, we are all proud of you!” said Aaron Resendez, superintendent.
McFarland Unified School District is a basic skills district where reading, writing, mathematics, and responsibility comprise the foundation for the educational program. MUSD strives to enhance a positive and creative atmosphere for in-service training, develop effective teaching strategies, improve home-school communication, and instill a sense of community within the district.
